As our mission states, we are here to to provide a small, structured and nurturing environment that supports the academic, social-emotional, vocational and behavioral growth of every student. Reaching this goal, however, requires joint responsibility of both the school and the student.

We ask that the students know and understand the following expectations.

Students Are Expected to:

• Appropriately use the hallway escort system when traveling during class periods.
• Adhere to the established Cell Phone and PED policy.
• Wear clothing that is appropriate for an academic environment. 
• Use appropriate language that others will not find offensive.
• Arrive to class on time, be ready to learn and ask for help when needed.

The Hallway Escort System

The hallway escort system is intended to reduce hallway disruption as well as provide a safer, quieter learning environment. 

All students require an escort through hallways during class periods regardless of the destination. If unable to escort a student classroom, staff should contact security or the main office. As part of the school-wide Quander Level System, a student on Level 6 has earned the privilege of 'No Escort Necessary' and may traverse the halls given teacher permission and the classroom hall pass.

Cell phone and P.E.D. policy

Cell phones may be used in class when it is required to complete a class assignment or project under the teacher’s explicit direction. Otherwise, students are required to keep all electronics off and out of sight during classroom instructional time.  

At no time will students be allowed to take or make phone calls, take pictures or make video recordings on our school campus or while riding the school bus.   Violation of this school policy will result in disciplinary actions.

• 1st Violation - Student will be asked to turn the device over to a teacher for the remainder of the class period.
• 2nd Violation -  The telephone will be confiscated and held in the main office for the remainder of the day.
• 3rd Violation - The telephone will be confiscated and a parent will have to pick up the phone. 
• Additional Violations will result is disciplinary actions by school administration.

Lost or stolen electronic devices are not the responsibility of Quander Road School or Fairfax County Public Schools. 

Dress Code

According to Regulation 2601.31P, all students are expected to dress appropriately for a K-12 educational environment. Any clothing that interferes with or disrupts the educational environment is unacceptable.

Clothing with language or images that are vulgar, discriminatory, or obscene, or clothing that promotes illegal or violent conduct, such as gang symbols, the unlawful use of weapons, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, or drug paraphernalia, or clothing that contains threats is prohibited.

Clothing should fit, be neat and clean, and conform to standards of safety, good taste, and decency. Clothing that exposes cleavage, private parts, the midriff, or undergarments, or that is otherwise sexually provocative, is prohibited.

Examples of prohibited clothing include, but are not limited to: sagging or low-cut pants, low-cut necklines that show cleavage, tube tops, halter tops, backless blouses or blouses with only ties in the back, studded belts, chain belts, clothing constructed of see-through materials, and head coverings unless required for religious or medical purposes. 

Language

Use of appropriate language while on campus shows respect for self, others and the academic environment. While in class, hallways, lunchroom, library and elsewhere, students should use appropriate language at all times. This behavior will generalize to work environments and the community if practiced at school.

On Time, Ready to Learn & Ask for Help

On Time

Students should report directly to class during transitions. If a student must address a personal or school related need, they must report to their classroom first. After requesting to leave the classroom, the hallway escort system must be followed. Students who are late to class should be marked tardy unexcused. 

Ready to Learn

Students should report to class ready to learn. Students should determine the materials needed for each school subject and how to take responsibility for having their materials ready. Students should follow established classroom procedures without prompts such as turn in homework, take out materials, log into laptop, etc. and prepare to listen, interact and learn. 

This "Ready to Learn" strategy supports the development of the universal skills of personal responsibility and being prepared for class. Personal responsibility, respect for self and others, and preparation will facilitate students’ success in all academic content areas and post secondary endeavors.

The "Ready to Learn strategy helps students be ready to meet specific employer needs. “Too often, high school students do not demonstrate workplace habits that employers prioritize, including reliability, punctuality, customer service and high-quality task completion,” said Andrew Rothstein, Chief Academic Officer of the National Academy Foundation.

Ask for Help

Self advocacy is a Quander Road School SMARTR goal, outlined in the School Innovation & Improvement Plan: Increase the percent of Special Education students who are able to identify appropriate Self-Advocacy strategies needed to graduate, earn industry credentials, successfully engage in community employment, and/or enroll in two and four year colleges.

Quander Road School facilitates use of the Individualized Education Plans in order to promote student self-advocacy in data driven course planning and goal setting. In addition, "It's Not Too Much To Ask" targets behaviors that show strong understanding and belief of self to engage in reflection for individual improvement and advocacy.
