10 Reasons Quander Road School Stands Out

Quander Road is one of two public (special education) high schools in FCPS offering a learning environment to better accommodate students with emotional, behavioral or social challenges. We have self-contained special education classes (4-12 students per class). Staff know each student by name and by need. Each student in the school has an Independent Education Plan (IEP).

Student Programs

All 9th grade students participate in an elective called Personal Development where students work on social and emotional skills, as well as specific course intervention and enrichment.

Staff RecognitionStaff and student interaction

Emotional Disabilities teacher Princessa Williamson has been recognized by FCPS Honors for her work at Quander Road.

Safety and Security

Our Safety and Security Team were winners of the FCPS Excellence Award in SY2023-24.

Community Engagement

Quander Road students may participate onsite in soccer, weight lifting, cheerleading/dance, environmental projects, community service and bi-monthly after school clubs. The Cobra basketball team competes in the Independent Non-Traditional Basketball League against area schools.

Environmental Stewardship Collaboration

WJLA (ABC 7) aired a TV feature story on our school’s environmental science outdoor learning classroom and the U.S. Coast Guard Partners in Education program.

College and Career Readiness

Students participated in a 2024 career fair where they learned about employment opportunities in everything from county police and fire departments, the U.S. Navy, Virginia Tire & Auto Body and local tattoo shops.

Student Growth and Progress

One Quander Road goal for the year is to improve student wellness through culturally responsive teaching, conflict resolution and trauma-informed care. We aim to accomplish this by a 50% increase in the amount of restorative practices used based on discipline outcomes.
